In the past few days there have been alarming reports of pollution of the Desna River and the Oster River (a Desna tributary) with unidentified chemicals. This, among other things, may lead to a situation, where contaminated water from the Oster River gets into the Kyiv water intake networks,” Serhiy Lovochkin noted.
This is stated in the inquiry sent to Prime Minister Volodymyr Groisman by MP Serhiy Lovochkin (OPPOSITION BLOC).
The member of parliament requests to take all necessary measures within the legally prescribed period and inform him as soon as possible what has been done by relevant services to resolve the situation and to ensure the environmental safety of the rivers Desna, Dnieper and Oster.
The politician cites experts, who claim that today Ukraine ranks 105th among 120 countries in terms of water pollution. “According to Ukrainian environment protection experts, the drinking water standards currently used by Ukraine were developed back in the 80’s. In the last 30 years many new substances emerged that are not accounted for in the state standards. Meanwhile, water consumed by our citizens is still purified based on the old standards,” he explains.
According to Serhiy Lovochkin, the threat of contamination of drinking water in Kiev and other cities calls for a timely government action.
