The Constitutional Court of Ukraine should stop the anti-state process of lustration resolutely and legitimately. This opinion was expressed by MP Serhiy Lovochkin, Deputy Chair of the OPPOSITION BLOC faction and the founder of the New Ukraine Foundation.

The MP welcomed the Supreme Court appeal to the Constitutional Court with a request to recognize unconstitutional the dismissal of officials subject to lustration without establishing their individual liability.

“I welcome the appeal of the Supreme Court to the Constitutional Court. The anti-state process of lustration should be stopped resolutely and legitimately,” the politician wrote in his Tweeter today.

Recall, the OPPOSITION BLOC opposes the current Law “On Government Cleansing,” which was harshly criticized by the Venice Commission. According to the findings of the Commission, this law does not meet European standards and is anti-democratic, because it contains a number of serious deficiencies that violate human rights in Ukraine. Given this fact, Venice Commission President Gianni Buquicchio advised the President of Ukraine to suspend the law until its elaboration. At the same time, changes to the Law “On Government Cleansing,” prepared by the Ministry of Justice come in conflict with Venice Commission recommendations. In particular, they provide that the body authorized to conduct lustration is fully under control of the government and depends on it. Besides, it is proposed to expand the circle of people that will be subject to the lustration check.
