Minister of Education Lilia Grinevich declared the readiness to send a controversial norm of the law “On Education” to the Council of Europe’s expertise. However, the parliamentary opposition in Ukraine calls on the president to simply veto this law, according to “Details”.

“We are categorically against the law on education in its present form, as it not only spoils Ukraine’s image in Europe – as we abandon democratic norms to protect the rights of citizens who speak different languages, their rights to educate people, their rights to hear this language, – they are also restricted in their own rights.

People want to speak their native language; they want their children to study in their native language. Moreover, the parliament, the majority of the parliamentary has no right to deprive people of this opportunity. This is a violation of constitutional rights, we believe that this law should be substantially amended; it cannot be signed in its present form.

Therefore, we, the Opposition Bloc, made an appropriate appeal and demanded the president to veto this law. The law should be changed; our European partners should see that we are not only in words but also in fact going to Europe and really applying legislation that meets European standards. In every country, the rights of people who want to speak in a language other than the state language and teach their children in a language other than the state language are clearly protected,” Serhiy Lovochkin, MP from the Opposition Bloc stated.
